What makes a GOOD Producer

You can frame what a producer does — manage the project by tracking tasks, running meetings, managing Jira.

But that doesn’t tell you what makes a GOOD producer!

In my experience, a good producer is defined less by process and more by their actions and interactions:

✪ A good producer supports - they work with their team to map the optimal path to success, balancing roadmap and schedule, Scrum process and Stories.

✪ A good producer learns - they know they’re not the subject matter expert. They embrace change, dig into new technology, and new ideas with an open, growth mindset.

These qualities don’t show up in job descriptions, many producers do not possess any or all of these qualities.

These qualities show up in the day-to-day, in the small interactions with others, in the moments when the project hangs in the balance, in the way producers help teams breathe and deliver on the goal.

If you’re looking to grow these skills — or sharpen them for your next role — our Game Production course is built to help you, whether you're:

▸ Looking to move into a Game Producer role from college
▸ Want to transition into Game Production from outside the games industry
▸ Moving up from a QA role to Production
▸ An indie or small studio who wants to harden your Production processes

✪ A good producer leads - they aren’t the captain of the ship, but they’re at the wheel. Others look to them for guidance, clarity, and steady direction.

✪ A good producer is calm - they are unflappable, with a cool-head, they help the team to keep moving forward. They shield the team from stress and project the 'plan', even when things are uncertain.

✪ A good producer listens - they hear what both their team and leadership are saying, absorb the information, and use it to guide the best outcome for product and people.
